Frustrating Finish Against FC Fredericia

AB Gladsaxe hosted their first home match of the 2026/27 Betinia Liga season on Friday, July 31, welcoming FC Fredericia to Gladsaxe Stadium for the club's second league match of the campaign.

Before kickoff, Emil Mygind received a standing ovation in recognition of his many years at AB, following his decision to retire from football.

The match also marked the AB debuts of Aidan Liu and Saliou Diop, both of whom made positive impressions after coming off the bench.

AB produced another strong performance, showing tremendous determination and playing attractive football throughout. It was a match filled with chances, though many opportunities went unfinished. The home side led from the 10th minute until stoppage time, when FC Fredericia found a late equalizer.

Before the match, many would likely have accepted a point against another recently relegated Superliga side. However, disappointment was written across the faces of the AB players after conceding so late.

AB took the lead through Milan Silva Rasmussen after 10 minutes, before Nemo Thomsen equalized in the first minute of stoppage time, as the match ended 1–1.

AB Starting XI

Compared to last week's match against Vejle, the coaching staff made a few changes.

Gabriel Noga replaced Noah Ibsen alongside Marc Dal Hende in central defense, while Noah Engell partnered Milan Silva Rasmussen in attack with Marcus Immersen unavailable.

Forwards: Jonathan Mathys, Noah Engell, Milan Silva Rasmussen, O'Vonte Mullings

First Half

Both sides started brightly. AB pressed high up the pitch and stayed tight to Fredericia's players, making it difficult for the visitors to build from the back. AB looked quick and direct whenever possession was won.

After 10 minutes, Milan Silva Rasmussen blocked a clearance, allowing O'Vonte Mullings to recover the ball before laying it back to Rasmussen. After beating his defender, Rasmussen calmly finished to make it 1–0. AB nearly doubled their lead moments later with two excellent chances that narrowly missed the target.

The new central defensive partnership of Marc Dal Hende and Gabriel Noga looked composed throughout the opening half.

Fredericia created several opportunities, mainly through crosses into the box, but goalkeeper Adam Ingi Benediktsson was outstanding, confidently claiming crosses and producing several important saves. The AB defense also stood firm, blocking numerous efforts on goal.

One of AB's best counterattacks came after 32 minutes, when Søren Ilsøe blocked a Fredericia effort before O'Vonte Mullings carried the ball nearly the length of the pitch. Noah Engell eventually received the pass, but his shot was saved.

Shortly afterward, Frederik Lindgaard intercepted a Fredericia pass and combined well with Noah Engell, but the return pass ran just beyond his reach.

Second Half

The pattern continued after halftime, with both teams creating opportunities. A dangerous cross from Søren Ilsøe found Milan Silva Rasmussen, whose header was brilliantly saved by Fredericia goalkeeper Valdemar Birksø. At the other end, Marc Dal Hende produced an excellent goal-line clearance to preserve AB's lead.

Jonathan Mathys then won possession high up the pitch and drove toward goal, but his effort drifted wide.

After 58 minutes, Casper Grening replaced Noah Engell. Aidan Liu made his AB debut, replacing Gabriel Noga in central defense. With just under 20 minutes remaining, Saliou Diop came on for Milan Silva Rasmussen, making his first appearance for the club.

As the match entered its closing stages, Fredericia continued to push for an equalizer, while AB remained dangerous on the counterattack. In stoppage time came the decisive moment. Frederik Lindgaard attempted to let the ball run out of play but was unable to do so. Fredericia recovered possession, and Daniel Haarbo delivered an excellent cross to the far post, where Nemo Thomsen headed home to make it 1–1.

It was a cruel ending to what had otherwise been another outstanding performance by AB.

Marc Dal Hende: "There's a lot to learn."

"In a way, it's fantastic to be sitting here disappointed after drawing today. We played a great match and defended with everything we had. We need to be more clinical with the counterattacks we created because we know that's one of our strengths. I'm incredibly proud of the boys, but right now the biggest feeling is disappointment that Fredericia equalized so late and we didn't take all three points. There's definitely something for us to go back and look at.

A point is obviously positive, but at AB we have high ambitions and we knew we could hurt them. We had two different centre-backs playing alongside me during the match, and I thought they both did very well. We've brought in several new players recently, and today two of them made their debuts. They made a fantastic impression physically and came into the game with a strong presence.

It was a great performance from everyone, and there's plenty to build on. But we're here to win football matches, so we also have to be critical and learn from today."

Fannar Berg Gunnólfsson: "I'm disappointed—but proud."

"We always play to win, so I'm not satisfied with one point because I know we were capable of beating them. The players' effort throughout the match was outstanding. We made a few mistakes in the first half that could have cost us, but in the second half they created very little, so it was incredibly disappointing to see that final ball end up in the net.

I felt for the players, but once again we've shown that we're strong enough to compete in this league. We had several new players involved, and situations like that are part of football. We have to deal with them. That said, we'll continue improving week by week from here."

AB's next match comes in the Betano Cup on Tuesday, August 4, away to Holbæk B&I at Holbæk Sportsby (kickoff 6:00 PM).

The next Betinia Liga fixture takes place on Saturday, August 8, when AB travel to face Hobro IK at DS Arena in Hobro (kickoff 4:00 PM).
