AB Suffer Unfortunate Defeat Against Hobro IK

AB traveled to DS Arena on Saturday, August 8, 2026, where Hobro IK hosted the team in the third round of the Betinia Liga season. The match ended in a 1–0 defeat for AB in front of 834 spectators at DS Arena. The decisive goal was scored by Mikkel M. Pedersen.

Compared with the previous match against FC Fredericia, the coaching staff made three changes to the starting lineup. Aidan Liu started at center back in place of Gabriel Noga, who began on the bench. Marco Vesterholm started in midfield instead of Mikkel Clement, while Travian Sousa started at left back in place of Tobias Damtoft.

AB's starting lineup was therefore: Adam Benediktsson in goal, Frederik Lindgaard at right back, Aidan Liu alongside Marc Dal Hende at center back, Travian Sousa at left back, Søren Ilsøe and Marco Vesterholm in midfield, Jonathan Mathys on the left wing, Noah Engell and Milan Silva Rasmussen up front, and O'Vonte Mullings on the right wing.

First Half

AB made an excellent start to the match. After just a minute, a throw-in was headed into the box to Marc Dal Hende, who got a shot away, but Hobro goalkeeper Jonas Dakir managed to deal with the situation.

AB were the better side, pressing high, moving the ball well and chasing their opponents all over the pitch. Marc Dal Hende and Aidan Liu worked well together in central defense, with Liu particularly impressive in the air and in the physical battles.

O'Vonte Mullings had an opportunity after a cross but unfortunately sent his effort over the bar. Noah Engell also had a chance following a counterattack, but the pass played into his path was slightly too long.

AB were everywhere and clearly dominated possession. It took until the 25th minute for Hobro to register their first attempt, which went over the bar. Hobro looked to play long balls toward their forward, Martin Huldahl.

After 34 minutes, Travian Sousa delivered a cross into the box. AB had two opportunities to get a shot away, but neither player could quite reach the ball.

With just under five minutes remaining in the first half, Jonathan Mathys found the back of the net, but unfortunately the goal was ruled out for offside.

Second Half

At the start of the second half, Jonathan Mathys was replaced by Casper Grening on the left wing.

Hobro immediately came out with greater intensity. Almost as soon as the referee had restarted the match, the home side sent a cross into the box. The resulting shot was blocked, but the ball remained in play. Hobro tried again, only for the effort to be blocked once more.

The attack eventually ended with Marc Dal Hende blocking another shot. However, the referee judged that the ball had struck his hand and awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area.

The free kick was struck low, sneaking underneath the wall and into the net to give Hobro a 1–0 lead.

Hobro continued to have the upper hand, although AB remained in the game. O'Vonte Mullings cut inside and got a shot away, but Hobro's goalkeeper tipped it behind for a corner. The resulting corner was headed over the bar.

After 62 minutes, Frederik Lindgaard was substituted, with Tobias Damtoft taking over at right back. Hobro remained dangerous on the counterattack and had a big chance from the middle of the box after 67 minutes, but the shot went wide. A minute later, O'Vonte Mullings hit the crossbar with a powerful effort.

AB pushed hard in search of an equalizer. The chances they created were good enough to produce a goal, but they could not find the finishing touch. Hobro also had opportunities, with Adam Ingi Benediktsson making an excellent intervention as he threw himself down to make a difficult save.

After 73 minutes, AB made two substitutions. Marco Vesterholm was replaced by Mikkel Clement in midfield, while Noah Engell made way for Saliou Diop up front. Diop immediately showed flashes of his ability, dribbling past five or six opponents. At times, however, he will need to recognize when to release the ball one or two passes earlier to avoid losing possession.

With four minutes remaining in normal time, Søren Ilsøe was replaced by Tobias Hageltorn, who was pushed further forward as AB committed more players to the attack. AB applied heavy pressure during the final ten minutes in search of an equalizer. Aidan Liu headed toward goal from a good cross, but his effort went just over the bar. AB's final attack produced another excellent opportunity. Tobias Hageltorn turned and fired toward goal, but the goalkeeper parried the shot. Casper Grening followed up, but the goalkeeper made another save. The match ended in an unfortunate 1–0 defeat following an impressive first half and a hard-fought second half.

Marc Dal Hende: "We deserved to take something from the game"

AB captain Marc Dal Hende felt the team deserved at least a point. "It's really disappointing. There's no doubt that we played a fantastic first half. I also have the feeling that we didn't make the most of our opportunities. That's the difference between this league and the one we came from: if we relax just a little bit, we get punished.

The way we came out for the second half was disappointing. We weren't ready, and they won all the second balls. We were playing against a mature and experienced team here. They're very good at defending their box.

I think we created the chances we needed. It's not characteristic of us to fail to score from those opportunities. Normally we have that final bit of sharpness, but we didn't have it today. I'm very proud of our first half, especially the way we played with the ball. We showed some really good things, but we need to start deciding games by scoring during our good periods.

We put a lot of energy into our pressing, and the players up front cover a lot of ground. We also have to recognize that Hobro made some adjustments at halftime. That meant we couldn't simply press them back the way we did in the first half. It's impossible to dominate for 90 minutes the way we did in the first half. We should have scored.

Toward the end, we weren't playing around them in the same way we did in the first half, and we threw everything forward to find an equalizer. I think we kept fighting until the end and can take a lot of pride from the performance. Of course, it's bitter to leave here with zero points because I think we deserved to take something from the game."

Fannar Berg Gunnólfsson: "We didn't match their energy"

Head coach Fannar Berg Gunnólfsson was equally frustrated with the result. "We dominated the entire first half and come away with nothing, which is really disappointing. In the first half we had good control of everything. I think we should have been more clinical, more aggressive and attacked their goal more. We allowed them to play and didn't get in behind them.

We came out for the second half and had no control of anything during the first 12–15 minutes, and they took the lead. I don't think there was a handball when the free kick was awarded, and then Hobro were holding Milan so he couldn't get forward and put pressure on the shot.

We should have created more chances. We weren't aggressive enough and didn't attack their defense. It's disappointing that we're leaving without any points, and it's especially disappointing that we couldn't match the energy Hobro brought into the second half, because we did that so well in the first half."

AB's next match is another away fixture, with the team traveling to Hjørring on Sunday, August 16, 2026, to face Vendsyssel FF at 2:00 PM.
