On Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 6:30 PM, AB Gladsaxe host Hvidovre IF at Gladsaxe Stadion.
The two clubs, both from the Greater Copenhagen area, have faced each other many times over the years at both youth and senior level. Their first teams have also been involved in some closely fought promotion and relegation battles.
AB and Hvidovre IF have not met in a competitive match since October 6, 2017, in the 2nd Division. However, they have often faced each other in preseason friendlies.
The second-most recent friendly took place on January 13, 2025, when AB won 3–0 thanks to goals from Marco Ramkilde, Casper Grening and Onesime Tembe.
In their most recent friendly, in February this year, Marco Ramkilde scored again, but Hvidovre won 2–1 in freezing conditions at Valby Idrætspark.
Relegation Drama — June 9, 2014
The final day of the 2013/14 1st Division season was set for a dramatic finish. Before the final round, Vendsyssel were in the relegation zone with 35 points. AB also had 35 points and were facing relegation. Hvidovre had 36 points but a worse goal difference, while Marienlyst had already been relegated. AB faced HB Køge, Hvidovre played Hobro, and Vendsyssel took on Horsens. And this is how the drama unfolded:
- 6th minute: Hvidovre fall behind in Hobro. All three relegation candidates are now effectively on 36 points, with Vendsyssel in the relegation zone due to the worst goal difference.
- 12th minute: AB fall 1–0 behind against HB Køge and move into the relegation zone on 35 points.
- 26th minute: AB go 2–0 down against HB Køge and are in the relegation zone at halftime — even though Hvidovre are also 2–0 down against Hobro. At this point, AB have one point fewer than Hvidovre.
- 72nd minute: AB score two quick goals to level the match at 2–2. All three teams are once again on 36 points, with Vendsyssel in the relegation zone on goal difference.
- 73rd minute: Horsens score to take a 1–0 lead against Vendsyssel, leaving Vendsyssel on 35 points and in the relegation zone.
- 83rd minute: Vendsyssel score twice in four minutes to take a 2–1 lead over Horsens. They move up to 38 points, while AB and Hvidovre remain on 36. Hvidovre now drop below the line on goal difference.
- 86th minute: AB score an own goal against HB Køge and suddenly find themselves below the relegation line with 35 points. Hvidovre look set to survive despite losing to Hobro, as they have one more point than AB.
Two minutes into stoppage time — absolute scenes at Gladsaxe Stadion!
AB equalize to make it 3–3 and move onto 36 points, level with Hvidovre. AB survive with a goal difference of -15, while Hvidovre are relegated with a goal difference of -20. Vendsyssel take care of their own business and remain in the 1st Division with their win over Horsens.
Hvidovre were relegated to the 2nd Division, while AB avoided relegation on the final day for the third consecutive season.
Back to 2026!
Hvidovre IF, who were one of the top teams in the Betinia Liga last season, have also started this campaign strongly. After four matches, they sit second in the league with 10 points. Most recently, Hvidovre defeated HB Køge 2–0 away from home in Køge. Hvidovre’s Donavan Bagou and AB’s Milan Silva Rasmussen have both scored four goals so far and are among the leading scorers in the Betinia Liga.
Following the win over Vendsyssel, AB sit in seventh place. AB come into the match after an impressive 3–0 away victory over Vendsyssel in Hjørring, where Milan Silva Rasmussen, Noah Engell and Casper Grening had already given AB a 3–0 lead by halftime.
The more than convincing performance also earned AB three places in Viaplay’s Team of the Round, with Aidan Liu, Noah Engell and O’Vonte Mullings all selected.
Casper Grening says the squad believes in what they can achieve:
“I think it will be a great match against Hvidovre on Saturday. It’s our second home game, and we put in a really good performance in our first home match against Fredericia. So if we can get a lot of people into the stadium and bring some of that same energy, it could be a fantastic evening at Gladsaxe Stadion.
If we can score three goals again, like we did against Vendsyssel, and bring the same clinical edge, ambition, aggression and energy that we showed there, then things look good.
It was impressive to go to Vendsyssel and match them — and even surpass them — in terms of energy and in the physical battles, which is normally their game plan. If we can do something similar against Hvidovre, who are a physically strong team with good players and strong individuals, then we’ll have come a long way.
We’re not going to change who we are. We need to do what we’re really good at and get the match played on our terms. There’s something special about our team — we lift each other up and work together, and that’s what helps us win football matches.
The trip home from Vendsyssel was long, but the mood was high. We played games and laughed a lot. It’s been a great week of training. We’re happy to be here and to be together — especially with three points in the bag.”
Head coach Fannar Berg Gunnólfsson expects an exciting challenge:
“Hvidovre have done really well so far. They’ve been very effective in what they do. Their striker is dangerous, so we need to make sure he doesn’t feel too comfortable on the pitch.
We play our own game, and of course there are differences when you face good players who require special attention. It will be an interesting match because they are very clear about what they do, so it will also be a difficult game. But if we are brave, I’m not afraid of this match.
I hope we get more than 2,000 spectators for the game. That’s a lot, but I hope we can break that barrier now that we have the opportunity with a derby match — especially on a Saturday night.”
Benjamin Svendborg will officiate the match, assisted by Gustav Qwist Olsen and Anders Randrup on the sidelines. Mathias Lykke will serve as fourth official.
