In front of 439 spectators, AB Gladsaxe claimed an impressive 5–1 win today over Ishøj IF on the temporary “home ground” at Brøndby Stadium’s pitch, “1964 Park”. AB had to do without injured players plus one suspended player compared to the most recent match in Thisted, but it’s fair to say AB’s squad depth showed just how strong it is.
AB’s goalscorers were Alfred Horup, Jonathan Mathys, Milan Silva Rasmussen and Casper Grening with two goals. Ishøj IF’s scorer was Sebastian Brodersen.
AB’s starting XI
Compared to the most recent match against Thisted FC, the coaching staff—also due to injuries—made changes in several positions in the starting XI. Noah Engell and Frederik Lindgaard were out injured. Travian Sousa replaced Frederik Lindgaard in the defensive line. Marco Vesterholm replaced the suspended Søren Ilsøe in midfield. Alfred Horup replaced Mikkel Brund in midfield, and Mikkel Brund took a seat on the bench. Up front, Tobias Hageltorn replaced Noah Engell.
The starting XI was then as follows
In goal: Adam Ingi Benediktsson; right back: Tobias Damtoft; centre backs: Marc Dal Hende and Adrien Koudelka; left back: Travian Sousa; midfield: Alfred Horup and Marco Vesterholm. On the left wing: Jonathan Mathys, and on the right wing: O’Vonte Mullings. Up front: Tobias Hageltorn and Casper Grening.
First-half summary
One minute into the match, Casper Grening had the first chance—and more would come for him as the game went on. In the first 7 minutes alone, he had three chances, but the ball didn’t go in. AB pressed Ishøj high up the pitch. Ishøj tried to play their way out with long balls. When Ishøj found space at times, they played good football and looked to spring quick counter-attacks.
Travian Sousa made several forward runs down the flank, and after 18 minutes he delivered a cross into the box, but it was cleared at the last moment—two AB players were otherwise ready in the area. From the resulting corner, Adrien Koudelka headed just over.
Shortly after, Ishøj almost got in one-on-one, but Adrian Koudelka stayed tight to his man and the finish was caught by Adam Ingi Benediktsson. Jonathan Mathys tried his luck with a shot that went just wide of the post. Travian Sousa again burst forward and delivered a really good cross into the box, but O’Vonte Mullings’ header went just over.
After 30 minutes, Ishøj won a corner. AB dealt with it, but Ishøj got the ball back in play and had a chance to shoot, but it ended in the side netting. Tobias Hageltorn put in an energetic performance and was constantly hunting the ball and staying close to Ishøj’s players, disrupting their build-up. He also tried a quick shot, but unfortunately it went wide, as did a header from him later on. After 41 minutes, Ishøj sent a cross into the box, but Adam Ingi Benediktsson caught it, and within the next minute Casper Grening surged forward and delivered a cross into the area, where Alfred Horup arrived to make it 1–0, which was the score at half-time.
Second-half summary
AB made two substitutions at the start of the second half. Noah Ibsen took Marc Dal Hende’s place at centre back, and Marco Vesterholm took over the captain’s armband. Jeppe Gertsen replaced Tobias Damtoft at right back.
Casper Grening continued to cause major problems for Ishøj’s defence. After 49 minutes, he had a big chance after a delicate pass into the box left the ball perfectly for a finish. Unfortunately, the shot wasn’t powerful enough to go in. Jonathan Mathys received a good cross into the box from Travian Sousa, but the chance wasn’t converted. That changed less than a minute later, when Jeppe Gertsen delivered a perfect cross into the area and Jonathan Mathys volleyed it home from distance to make it 2–0 after 51 minutes.
O’Vonte Mullings nicked the ball off an Ishøj defender just outside the box. In a small space, he made a couple of quick dribbles to the byline and delivered a fine cross into the area. The chance was converted with absolute certainty for 3–0 by Casper Grening.
Tobias Lykkebak took Alfred Horup’s place in midfield, and Milan Silva Rasmussen came on for Jonathan Mathys. Casper Grening moved to the left wing and Milan Silva Rasmussen went up front.
Ishøj had a bit more initiative and got off a couple of shots, with Adam Ingi Benediktsson ready again. After a turnover in midfield, Ishøj combined well down the flank and played the ball into the box, where it was laid back to Sebastian Brodersen, who fired it into the top corner to reduce it to 3–1 with 20 minutes left.
After 76 minutes, Mikkel Brund came on at left back and Travian Sousa took a seat on the bench.
Jeppe Gertsen played it out wide to O’Vonte Mullings, who as usual dribbled across the pitch. He was brought down centrally a couple of metres outside the box. Milan Silva Rasmussen took the free kick, but it was blocked by Ishøj’s defence and was close to ending up in the net.
The tireless engine Tobias Hageltorn did the groundwork and, with a brilliant pass, played Milan Silva Rasmussen through in the six-yard box. He spun around and delicately chipped the ball over Ishøj goalkeeper Alfred Maslen to make it 4–1.
Just a minute later, it was Milan Silva Rasmussen who did the groundwork, and a ball that otherwise looked lost was picked up by Casper Grening, who calmly put it away to make it 5–1.
Ishøj tried to play quickly and a good shot was close to going over Adam Ingi Benediktsson, but he leapt high and caught the ball.
In stoppage time, Marco Vesterholm took a corner and, as usual, Adrien Koudelka rose highest, but unfortunately headed over. Ishøj had a free man in the box, but once again Adam Ingi Benediktsson came to the rescue, and the match ended in a big 5–1 win. AB’s supporters gave a standing ovation in the final two minutes. With the win, the overall goal difference rose to an impressive 53–20. It’s looking good!
Captain Marc Dal Hende says the squad depth makes the difference: “I think Ishøj do well and get off to a good start. I think with the new system they’re playing, they’ve got a good structure and build up with a lot of players. So they did well, but I also think we were comfortable, and with the qualities we have in attack, we’ll get our chances.
We did today as well and scored a lot of goals. Spread across several goalscorers, so it was a really good win and we’re on a really good run.
So we need to stay humble and just keep our foot on the gas. What’s so good is the continuity we have. We pride ourselves on having a strong squad, and we showed it again today, with some of our really good players out injured, and when we make changes during the match, other players just come in and deliver. It says a lot about the squad we have, and we just have to keep going—there’s plenty of competition across the board in every position. It’s a real pleasure to be part of,” Marc Dal Hende concludes.
Head coach Fannar Berg Gunnólfsson praised the entire squad: “We were absolutely outstanding today. We could have scored many more goals, and every player was fantastic. We weren’t completely happy with some things last weekend, but today the players were really good. Casper Grening got a lot of chances, and he could have scored more. We don’t look at how many times we take a chance and get a goal.
Today we saw the team play at a fantastic level. It took about half an hour before we broke through. We had a lot of chances, but we couldn’t convert them. The players got a bit frustrated that we didn’t score. At half-time we told them to stay calm, play our game, and the goals would come.”
“Today we had some injured players and one suspended, but the squad is so good that I could take Marc and Damtoft off and rest them, so we can use them next weekend, because we’ve relied a lot on both of them. It shows how strong the team is and what fantastic players we have in every position,” Fannar Berg Gunnólfsson concludes.
The next match will be played on Friday 27 April 2026 at 19:00 at home against FC Roskilde.
