AB Gladsaxe got revenge today for the 3–2 defeat in the autumn at Gladsaxe Stadium, as AB beat Thisted FC 2–0 at Sparekassen Thy Arena.
AB made it 1–0 after 20 minutes through Marc Dal Hende, and Jonathan Mathys scored for 2–0 after 40 minutes,
The match was marked by being played on a grass surface that had been through a long, cold winter. A strong crosswind didn’t make it any easier. As a result, both teams struggled throughout the match to fully get control of their play.
Compared to the most recent match against HIK, the coaching staff chose to start Mikkel Brund in central midfield alongside Søren Ilsøe, with Alfred Horup taking a seat on the bench.
AB’s starting lineup then looked like this
In goal: Adam Ingi Benediktsson; right back: Frederik Lindgaard; centre-backs: Marc Dal Hende and Adrien Koudelka; left back: Tobias Damtoft; in midfield: Mikkel Brund and Søren Ilsøe. On the left wing: Jonathan Mathys, and on the right wing: O’Vonte Mullings. Up front, Noah Engell and Casper Grening started.
Match report
There weren’t many chances early on and the match was very even. The ball spent a lot of time in the air and both teams found it hard to get their play going. After 7 minutes, Thisted had a free kick centrally in front of goal, and the cross into the box was headed away by AB’s defence, with the follow-up shot going over the bar. Just four minutes later, AB had a corner, which Thisted’s goalkeeper managed to push away. Thisted were quick to the ball and quick going forward, but it didn’t create chances. AB were under a bit of pressure for short spells and struggled to apply the necessary pressure themselves.
After 20 minutes, Mikkel Brund launched a long throw into the box, where Marc Dal Hende could head the ball into the net at the far post to make it 1–0.
Thisted pushed on and had a couple of good deliveries, but Adam Ingi Benediktsson dealt with them confidently and managed to stop a strong spell from Thisted.
Just under 5 minutes before the break, O’Vonte Mullings made a long run from his own half down the line and all the way up the pitch. He played a pass across to Jonathan Mathys, who had moved into the box, and he made it 2–0.
Just a minute later, Frederik Lindgaard had to leave the pitch with an injury and was replaced by Travian Sousa, who came on at left back, with Tobias Damtoft switching to right back.
Noah Engell had to go off with an ankle injury a couple of minutes before half-time. He was replaced by Tobias Lykkebak at the start of the second half, taking over the role up front.
The pattern of the match continued in the second half. Thisted did get more into the game—perhaps helped by the wind at their backs. That gave Thisted a few dangerous efforts, which Adam Ingi Benediktsson fortunately dealt with. After 64 minutes, Marcus Immersen came on and Jonathan Mathys took a seat on the bench. Marcus Immersen was moved up front, and Casper Grening took over on the left wing. Towards the end of the match, Jeppe Gertsen came into the defence at full-back and Tobias Damtoft left the pitch. A slightly injured Søren Ilsøe was replaced by Alfred Horup.
AB had only sporadic attempts in the second half and battled their way through it, managing to see out the result and keep another clean sheet.
Captain Marc Dal Hende thought it was a fantastic win today: “Coming here to Thisted for the first time on grass against a team that’s so clear in what they do—it’s just great to be able to win. They’re so good at what they do.
We keep a clean sheet and of course they have a few chances along the way, but then we’ve got an insanely good keeper. Our attack is just good. The way we put them under pressure is absolutely fantastic.
In the second half it turns into a bit of a mess. But the way we stand firm and don’t give much away is excellent. I think they have one big chance and Adam makes a fantastic save. It’s a big win today. There are a lot of teams that will have problems here in Thisted, there’s no doubt about that.
The premise today was that good football had to give way to the fight. We came from a really good pitch in Brøndby where we could play our game. Here we knew it would take a completely different game plan, and I think we delivered that. I’m really happy to win, and when you can win those ugly matches, it’s going to be a good season,” Marc Dal Hende concludes.
Head coach Fannar Berg Gunnólfsson was very pleased with the result: “We came here to Thisted to get 3 points—and we did. We also got a clean sheet and two goals, so I’m very happy with that. It wasn’t the best football match, but everyone put in a fantastic effort.
It was difficult to play on the pitch, which wasn’t in the best condition. On top of that there was a fairly strong wind and the sun was low. We knew we had a job to do and the lads did it despite the special conditions.
It’s not easy to travel such a long way across Denmark and then come away with 3 points, 2 goals and a clean sheet. I don’t think they had that many dangerous chances where they could get into the match and seriously threaten us,” Fannar Berg Gunnólfsson concludes.
The next match will be played on Saturday, 21 March 2026 at 18:00 against Ishøj. The match will be played at “1964 Park” (Pitch 2) at Brøndby Stadium.
