AB Gladsaxe played the postponed match from August 2nd today on August 20th, where a cloudburst with lightning and thunder meant that the referee stopped the match after 14 minutes of play.
Today’s match ended with a 1-0 victory for AB on a goal in the 81st minute by Jonathan Mathys. One goal was enough for victory today, but there weren’t really many chances at all in that match.
AB’s Lineup
Compared to last week’s match against Brabrand, there were no changes in the starting lineup. In goal stood Adam Ingi Benediktsson, at right back Frederik Lindgaard, in central defense Adrien Koudelka and Noah Ibsen, and at left back Marc Dal Hende. In central midfield were Mikkel Brund and Marco Vesterholm, on the right wing O’Vonte Mullings and on the left wing Casper Grening. Up front were Ægir Jarl Jonásson and Marcus Immersen.
Match Report
There weren’t really any big chances in today’s match. It must be said that Ishøj IF played very physically, which O’Vonte Mullings and Casper Grening especially had to endure with their bodies, legs and heads. Casper Grening had to leave with an injury after 25 minutes and was replaced by Jonathan Mathys. Marcus Immersen was played completely free in the middle of the pitch and if the referee hadn’t called offside, he would most likely have scored.
Ishøj had a lot of possession and managed to slow AB down. AB had difficulty setting their game and gaining control of the match, and there were periods with quite a few misplaced passes. AB stood well defensively and managed to ward off Ishøj’s attempts to break through. AB didn’t win many second balls, and the two strikers had difficulty holding onto the ball. The score at halftime was 0-0.
The second half had barely started when Ishøj got possession in the middle of the pitch and two players sprinted toward AB’s goal and got a shot off, but Adam Ingi Benediktsson made a masterful save. AB gradually took control and showed aggressive pressing. Ishøj had sporadic opportunities for shots, but the attempts went wide of the goal.
After 61 minutes of play, Joey Gudjonsson made a triple substitution, where Søren Ilsøe took over the central position in midfield after Mikkel Brund. Marco Ramkilde came on instead of Ægir Jarl Jonasson. Noah Engell came on instead of Marcus Immersen.
This meant a new attack, where Noah Engell and Marco Ramkilde were positioned up front, and it was wonderful to see the two players on the pitch again after injury breaks. They picked up the pace and created good combinations in attack, and they managed to create unrest in Ishøj’s defense.
A good pass from Noah Engell to Marco Ramkilde and on to O’Vonte Mullings could have resulted in a goal after 65 minutes, but O’Vonte Mullings was just a bit too late. After 77 minutes, O’Vonte Mullings was again close to scoring, but it wasn’t to be today. It was Jonathan Mathys instead who, after a long sprint and a good pass from Noah Engell, could score to make it 1-0. In the 90th minute, a well-playing O’Vonte Mullings left the pitch and was replaced by Tobias Damtoft on the right wing.
In the referee’s 6 minutes of added time, AB played controlled football to secure the victory. This triggered great celebration, which was celebrated together with the jubilant fans.
Captain Marc Dal Hende said that we have many strings to play on:
“I feel it was a bit of a locked match. It’s not because I feel that Ishøj has that much. They have the buildup for it in the first half. We didn’t get flow in our game and it didn’t become so rhythmic for us. We know well that it’s in these matches that you have to pull through victoriously just like in the weekend match against Brabrand. Now we have two victories in a row and we’re building on that.
Jonathan Mathys is a really good offensive player we’ve acquired, he comes in and decides it for us. It just shows something about the depth in the squad, and that we have many strings to play on.
We have many skilled offensive players and I also think we are solid defensively today. I don’t see the wild saves from Adam, even though he’s so strong at coming out in the box. So I think we were solid today and it was good to see, because I think we’ve been lacking a bit in the first matches.
It’s quite a bench we can field, and how wonderful it was to get Marco Ramkilde and Noah Engell on the pitch. There must be other teams that are licking their lips over our squad and it also just shows how much competition there is on our team. The tournament is long, so there will be need for all hands”, concludes Marc Dal Hende.
Head coach Joey Gudjonsson thought they were unlucky: “It was a tight match. Ishøj did well. They had changed the formation they’ve played for a long time to a 4-4-2 formation. They tried to make it difficult for us. It also took us quite a while before we got control of the match. In the second half we totally controlled the match. I don’t think Adam has a real save in the entire match.
We were unlucky in a couple of situations. O’Vonte had a couple of chances that he missed. I’m not sure that Immersen was offside when he broke through and scored in the first half.
Overall, the players showed character and kept working hard. We pressed a lot and there was a lot of energy. It’s quite clear that when Noah Engell and Marco Ramkilde came on in the second half, we showed a bit more cohesive play and held onto the ball better at the end of the match. It was an absolutely incredible finish from Jonathan Mathys, which resulted in a goal. He works hard, has plenty of pace and he’s a really good finisher, so I was very happy when he scored today”, concludes Joey Gudjonsson.
The next match will be played Saturday, August 23rd, 2025 at 3:00 PM against Thisted FC at Gladsaxe Stadium.
