AB played yesterday Friday, August 29, 2025, against Vendsyssel FF in Hjørring. It was a really exciting match where AB, after a hard-fought team effort and a great team performance, could celebrate a 3-2 victory. AB’s goals were scored by Marcus Immersen (28′), Jonathan Mathys (64′) and Marcus Immersen (80′). Vendsyssel’s goals were scored by Precious Tonya Williams (47′) and Malthe Holt Nielsen (62′).
The match was watched by 805 spectators.

AB’s starting line-up

Compared to the latest match against Thisted, Frederik Jørgensen took a place on the bench together with Tobias Damtoft and Søren Ilsøe. They were replaced by Frederik Lindgaard, O’Vonte Mullings and Ægir Jarl Jonásson. Mikkel Brund had moved from midfield down to left back.

The starting lineup was therefore: Adam Ingi Benediktsson in goal, at right back Frederik Lindgaard, in central defense Adrien Koudelka (captain) and Noah Ibsen and at left back Mikkel Brund. In central midfield were Marco Vesterholm and Ægir Jarl Jonásson, on the right wing O’Vonte Mullings and Tobias Hageltorn on the left wing. Up front were Jonathan Mathys and Marcus Immersen.

Notes from the match

Vendsyssel started aggressively and pressed towards AB’s goal. AB stood well defensively and gradually gained more control of the match. AB got their play moved forward to Vendsyssel’s half with long balls and constantly hunting for second balls. Vendsyssel also played with long balls and also fought for second balls. This created a rather disjointed match with many duels and free kicks. In the first half alone, the referee handed out five yellow cards.

AB generally played with long goal kicks from Adam Ingi Benediktsson, and especially O’Vonte Mullings chased down several balls, but it didn’t create decisive chances. AB’s defense stood well, and even though a Vendsyssel player created a quick counter-attack, they were ready to deal with the situation. Vendsyssel had really good chances to take the lead with four shots in the same attack, but AB’s defense managed to block all four shots.
Then came the goal after a long and precise pass to Marcus Immersen, who hammered the ball into the net for a 1-0 lead. Marcus Immersen played a really good match in the green jersey, and was cheered by his own fans after the match.

O’Vonte Mullings got one of the countless opportunities to advance on the pitch and ran towards the box. He delivered a good cross into the box, but neither Marcus Immersen nor Jonathan Mathys could score, even though they both threw themselves at the ball, which ended up well over the goal.

With just under 10 minutes left of the first half, a Vendsyssel player got away well and was alone with Adam Ingi Benediktsson, who fearlessly threw himself down on the ball and dealt with the situation. Adam Ingi Benediktsson again played an exceptionally good match, and had many match-deciding saves.

AB went to halftime with a deserved 1-0 lead.

The second half was only 2 minutes old when Vendsyssel quickly advanced and got a cross into the box, where Precious Tonya Williams equalized to 1-1. After a quarter of an hour in the second half, Tobias Hageltorn was substituted and replaced by Søren Ilsøe, who was placed in central midfield. Ægir Jarl Jonásson was moved forward to the center of the attack and Marcus Immersen was placed on the left wing.

The goal gave Vendsyssel a taste for more, and they applied greater pressure, which after 62 minutes resulted in a goal to make it 2-1 by Malthe Holt Nielsen, who stood completely free in the box. However, that lead only lasted two minutes, when Jonathan Mathys got the ball from the opposite side and was completely free. He brought the ball down and after a couple of quick touches, he hammered the ball into the net in the far corner to equalize 2-2.

AB were not satisfied with a draw and pushed forward with everything they had. The mission succeeded when Marcus Immersen on the right side and with only 10 minutes left of regular time, received the ball and beat his direct opponent and fired the ball into the net for a 3-2 lead.
With around seven minutes left of regular playing time, Alfred Peter Horup came on and replaced Jonathan Mathys. Jeppe Gertsen came into the defense as extra protection against Vendsyssel’s final pressure and he replaced Ægir Jarl Jonásson. In the closing stages of the match, Tobias Damtoft replaced Mikkel Brund at left back.

The referee had added six minutes, so there was almost unbearable tension. AB fought heroically and were good at getting the ball cleared up to Vendsyssel’s half, so time could pass. The referee blew the final whistle and the celebration could break out among players, coaches and the AB fans who were at the stadium.

Captain Adrien Koudelka was in no doubt about why they won: “We won today because we played together as a team. It was much better than last week’s match. We didn’t play the world’s best football today, but that doesn’t matter, because we won the match.
We played together, we played for each other and we fought for each other – that’s why we win the match. It was a physical match today with long balls, but we were there. We were on the first balls, and we were there on the second balls. Even when we fall behind, I’m confident that we’ll score more goals. We have quality, lots of quality in the team, so I was positive throughout today’s match – and I knew we could win the match,” concludes Adrien Koudelka.

Head coach Joey Gudjonsson came for three points and got them: “It was an incredible team performance. I could sense it when we met at Skovdiget to take the bus all the way up here. When the players got on the bus, it was clear that they were ready for the match. They were focused, even though it took us a long time before we reached Hjørring. They took control of the match very early, and it was absolutely fantastic to experience. Vendsyssel changed their game plan a bit in the second half and they got back into the match.

It was also fantastic to see our players show character and get back into the match. It was a very difficult place to play against a really good team.

The victory gives the players belief that they can win – just take Immersen’s two goals – what great goals and Jonathan’s goal – what a goal! That’s great quality we have in the team today – it was absolutely fantastic.
I think we need to look a bit more at the defensive side, because they score too many goals. Today I don’t care that they score two goals because we score three!

We came for three points and many, many good individual performances and a great team performance gave us them. It was definitely the best first half played this season. They played with concentration and quality. When they saw weaknesses in Vendsyssel’s defense, they went after them again and again. O’Vonte was on fire in the first half – they couldn’t stop him, so they had to change their play so they were able to stop him.
I’m really happy with the performance today, especially because our last match definitely wasn’t good. But what a way to bounce back. It shows that the players take responsibility for what we do and show it with the intensity and character they showed today – it’s absolutely incredible,” concludes Joey Gudjonsson.

The next match will be played Friday, September 5 at 7:00 PM at Gladsaxe Stadium, where AB will face Næstved IF.
