In front of 684 spectators, AB Gladsaxe lost 4-1 to FC Roskilde at Roskilde Idrætspark on Friday, September 12th, in a match that never became AB’s game. It was a clear off day where not much went according to plan. AB had come to the match with optimism after victories over Vendsyssel and Næstved.
AB’s Lineup
Compared to the latest match against Næstved, one change was made as Noah Engell took over the striker position from Tobias Hageltorn, who took a place on the bench. The starting lineup was then: Adam Ingi Benediktsson in goal, Tobias Damtoft at right back, Adrian Koudelka (captain) and Noah Ibsen in central defense, and Mikkel Brund at left back. In central midfield were Marco Vesterholm and Ægir Jarl Jónasson, with O’Vonte Mullings on the right wing and Jonathan Mathys on the left wing. Up front were Noah Engell and Marcus Immersen.
Match Report
Today, AB’s attack was messy, and there was no coherence or consistency in their play. This meant that the usually well-oiled AB machine, which we’ve seen in recent matches, never got started. After 7 minutes of play, FC Roskilde sent a long ball to one of their fast forwards. In an attempt to tackle him, Adrien Koudelka committed a penalty, and Lasse Emil Nielsen scored confidently for 1-0.
Overall, FC Roskilde played patiently, waiting to play long passes to their quick forwards. AB played slowly and indecisively, and their pressing game wasn’t working, so FC Roskilde had time to play the ball forward. After 21 minutes, an all too short pass was intercepted by a Roskilde player, who ran towards goal and played it to an onrushing Mathias Veltz, who scored for 2-0.
Roskilde had several attempts where they sent the ball wide or where Adam Ingi Benediktsson pulled off impressive saves. Finally, after half an hour of play, O’Vonte Mullings received a good pass, took a single touch, and shot the ball into the goal for 1-2.
A free kick from the right side gave Noah Ibsen a chance to equalize, but he headed the ball just over the goal. Shortly before halftime, Roskilde got a corner kick, and Mads Skøtt stood unmarked and could head the ball in for a 3-1 lead.
After the break, AB came onto the pitch with renewed energy, but the somewhat disjointed play continued. Marco Vesterholm managed to get a good shot off, but the ball hit a Roskilde player and went up onto the crossbar. Tobias Damtoft also took a chance with a shot, but the ball went wide. After fifteen minutes of play in the second half, AB lost the ball in their own half, and Valdemar Montell could run past AB’s defense and score for 4-1.
In an attempt to change the game, AB made four substitutions. Jonathan Mathys, Ægir Jarl Jonasson, Noah Engell, and Mikkel Brund were replaced by Tobias Hageltorn, Frederik Lindgaard, Søren Ilsøe, and Marco Ramkilde.
After this, Frederik Lindgaard played at right back, Tobias Damtoft at left back, Tobias Hageltorn on the left wing, Marco Ramkilde was positioned offensively, and Søren Ilsøe in midfield.
The passing became faster and ball movement quicker after the substitutions, but it didn’t create any major opportunities. Roskilde continued playing with long passes and counter-attacks. This gave them chances, but no more goals came. In the final part of the match, AB showed examples of good combinations and shots, with one shot hitting the inside of the post and bouncing back into play – a goal would have been nice there. In the closing stages of the match, Alfred Horup took over at left back from Tobias Damtoft.
Captain Adrien Koudelka felt that AB defeated themselves today: “I’m obviously very frustrated with today’s result and the way we played. We didn’t play together and weren’t brave enough with the ball. We weren’t cohesive without the ball and it just wasn’t good enough today. I feel that the first 10-15 minutes were okay with and without the ball, but when they got their second goal, it became difficult. Nothing in Roskilde’s play surprised us. With respect to Roskilde, we defeated ourselves today,” concludes Adrien Koudelka.
In today’s match, assistant coach Fannar Gunnolfsson was in charge, as head coach Joey Gudjonsson was suspended.
Assistant coach Fannar Gunnolfsson admitted it was an off day: “We started the match poorly – we faced many counter-attacks, we gave away a penalty, and a misunderstanding gave them a chance to score, which they did. The players lost some focus on what we should do and what we stand for. From there, we were always chasing something. We tried to fix things that happened earlier in the match. It’s a bad situation to be in and we couldn’t get ourselves out of it again.
The energy was there, but we weren’t patient enough to build up play and get the ball into the right areas to attack from there. We constantly felt we needed to score two goals, get the equalizer, and get through it as quickly as possible instead of playing the game as we want to. It was disappointing – we’ve lost a match and we know this was an off day for us, but this isn’t the kind of performance we want to stand for or be known for,” concludes Fannar Gunnolfsson.
The next match will be played at Gentofte Sportspark against HIK on Friday, September 19, 2025, at 19:00.
