First-half recap
Unlike the first three friendlies, the coaching staff opted to give more minutes to today’s starting eleven. So the match wasn’t played with two different teams in each half.
AB got off to a really good start when O’Vonte Mullings was played in down the flank, took a couple of quick touches into the box and smashed the ball into the net after just 2 minutes to make it 1–0.
Both teams started with a high press. AB played long balls up to the forwards. After a frantic start AB became more organised and played more along the ground.
It was a physical match, with much of the play featuring plenty of duels in midfield. AB had a large share of the play and at times also produced good diagonal switches.
After 20 minutes AB got into a good position and created a chance, but the finish hit the post. Trelleborg’s first attempt came after just under 30 minutes, but the shot went straight into the arms of Adam Ingi Benediktsson. Casper Grening got forward well down the flank and delivered a good cross to Noah Engell, who unfortunately put the ball wide. After 39 minutes Trelleborg intercepted a loose pass from AB and sent several players sprinting towards AB’s goal, but Adam Ingi Benediktsson saved the shot.
Towards the end of the first half Trelleborg took control and on several occasions outmatched AB’s midfield. It gave them opportunities, but no goals, and the score was 1–0 to AB at half-time.
Second-half recap
AB continued with the same line-up for the second half and started well. As time went on, AB gained more and more control of the game. After 51 minutes Travian Sousa came on at left-back for Mikkel Brund. Tobias Lykkebak came into midfield for Ægir Jarl Jonasson.
After 54 minutes AB broke on the counter after a good press. O’Vonte Mullings got the ball on the wing and whipped a cross into the box, and it ended up as an own goal to make it 2–0. Milan Silva Rasmussen came on and was pushed up front, and Marcus Immersen took a seat on the bench.
Four minutes later AB won a free-kick on the right side a couple of metres outside the box. Noah Engell played it short to Frederik Lindgaard on the right wing, who laid it off to O’Vonte Mullings. Mullings finished with a thunderbolt into the top corner to make it 3–0.
Less than four minutes later AB won a corner on the left. Travian Sousa was in the box and headed the ball back, where Jeppe Gertsen was well placed and fired it in to make it 4–0.
Noah Ibsen came on and replaced Jeppe Gertsen in central defence. Jonathan Mathys took Casper Grening’s place on the left wing. Tobias Hageltorn came on for O’Vonte Mullings on the right wing, with Mullings moved into the middle to replace Noah Engell.
With just under 10 minutes of normal time left, Emil Mygind Jensen came on. O’Vonte Mullings, who played like he owned Sweden, took a seat on the bench.
Anton Boye replaced Adrien Koudelka in central defence. Alfred Horup replaced Søren Ilsøe in midfield.
As in the first half, Trelleborg took control in the closing minutes and had good chances to score, but Adam Ingi Benediktsson rounded off a strong performance with several fine saves.
Head coach Fannar Berg Gunnólfsson feels AB are on the right track: “There was a difference between the two halves. We started the match brilliantly, but then we had to battle a bit for the ball. In the last part of the first half we didn’t make the defensive adjustments we need to make, so they got a bit more control of the ball. At half-time we talked about how we should do the different things. It worked in the second half, and we dominated the match.”
“We were clinical and scored four goals. Jeppe scored a good goal and all of O’Vonte’s goals were good, with real quality. We could have scored more, but they could also have scored a couple. We got valuable minutes into the boys, and those who came on brought great energy so we could maintain the quality for the full 90 minutes.”
“We knew they would press high, so we focused on that. We made a couple of mistakes in the first half where we played into their press, and we didn’t see that at all in the second half. Of course misunderstandings happen, and we constantly need to remind each other what to do and how to do it. The second half was a good example of how we can and should play through them. We’re on the right track,” concludes Fannar Berg Gunnólfsson.
The next friendly will be played on Friday February 20, 2026 at 7:00 PM.
