Exactly one year ago, on May 15, 2024, Joey Guðjónsson was presented as head coach of AB.
It also marks the first almost full season under Joey’s leadership in Season 2. Division, where AB played their way into the promotion playoffs.
The Icelandic head coach looks back on a year at the club, where he has felt the special energy that lies in AB.
“The first year has really confirmed my enthusiasm for the job. The club has enormous potential and both the employees and volunteers around the club are really passionate about helping to push in the right direction. It’s really something you can feel as a coach, and it creates a positive everyday life,” says Joey Guðjónsson and continues:
“Furthermore, I am proud to be a place that both historically and presently develops talented footballers, and it is a privilege to be able to contribute to a small part of history, both for the club, but also for the young players who get the chance to break through.”
Sports director Jen Chang also sees very concrete improvement points for the club under Joey’s leadership.
“He has focused on our pressing game, and as a result, AB tops 2. Division with 9.38 on PPDA (Passes Per Defensive Action, which is a number that shows the number of passes a team allows the opponent before a defensive action occurs). Our offensive has also improved, and we top 2. Division on shots on goal with 330. It is the first time since the 2017/2018 season that we are the best in that category.”
